Teaching guitar at an art academy
This
placement/voluntary work will take place at the biggest and most renowned art academy of Tanzania, the Bagamoyo Art School. The school is looking for
volunteers who can teach guitar. The position will not be paid, but volunteers
can join all other classes offered at the academy.
The school
has been founded in 1963 after the end of colonialism to make Tanzanians proud
of their cultural heritage and arts. Founded as the “National Performing Arts
Company”, the focus in the beginning was on drumming, acrobatics and acting. At
the end of the 1970’s the National Performing Arts Company had been abolished
and the Art
Academy
had been launched. Other performing arts such as music forms different than
drumming had been added, and also plastic and visual arts such as painting and
sculpturing. Today, the range of studies is completed by the areas of stage
technology (lighting, sound, make-up) and digital art (multimedia, graphic
design, animation). Some of the most famous artists and musician of the country
are graduates of the school and they still stay in constant contact with it.
The school
is beautifully located in the middle of a park which is shaded by a population
of old trees, right next to a beach. The surroundings and the big amount of
people who are interested in arts make this place especially inspiring for
artists. Interns/Volunteers will be integrated as part of the teaching staff. They
will be introduced to the syllabus and should teach in accordance to it.
