Children's clinic at the SOS Children's Village in Zanzibar
The SOS Children's Village Zanzibar operates its own well-equipped outpatients' clinic which focusses on children, however it is also open to adults from the area. Every day there are around 30-40 patients - basically it is more a general practitioner's surgery.
Most treatments are done for outpatients, however there a also a few beds for short time inpatients. Every Monday, a gynaecologist is working at the centre.
Besides this general practitioner's surgery, there is a birth centre. Women are looked after during pregnancy (prenatal) and mother and child are being checked after the birth (postnatal). Births however are not taking place at the centre. The midwife working for SOS, Fatima is usually doing the births at the private homes of the mothers or she accompanies them to the government hospital of Mnazi Mmoja.
The newborns and babies are being vaccinated, weighted and checked at the centre. Further information about hygiene and family planning is given.
We can arrange volunteering options and internships at this centre to university and vocational students from the areas of medicine, (child) nursing and similar. You can assist at the surgery and birth centre and accompany Fatima.
Our volunteer Marco has produced a very professional video about the SOS Children's Village in Zanzibar:
