Development and education work
Bir Chifae is a quarter in Tangier/Morocco where during the past years many migrants with low education from rural areas have settled down. In the 1980's and 90's, the quarter was a slum ("Bidonville"), however today, slum-like conditions don't exist any more. The corrugated iron dwellings have been replaced by proper houses as part of the municipality's city planning, and infrastructure has been developed. However, still today the level of illiteracy, low education and unemployement is higher in Bir Chifae than in other parts of the city. Many inhabitants of the quarter are working in low-pay sectors.
To improve the qualify of life for the inhabitants of Bir Chifae and to sensitize them about critical issues, there are the two NGOs ALUAFAE (Associacion pour le development et la solidarité) and CHIFAE. Both of them are running community centres with educational offers.
For these centres, volunteers are needed to teach. Subjects to be taught include:
Languages - French, Spanish and English at CHIFAE and ALUAFAE.
Computer technology and application - In 2006 CHIFAE opened a computer workshop, offering computer supplies and maintenance to private and corporate customers. Youth can get a qualified professional training in fitting and repairing computers. ALUAFAE is giving computer lessons at beginner's level. CHIFAE also has courses of web design, multimedia, network technologies and data base programming.
Tailoring workshop - The textile industry plays an important role in the city of Tanger, as there are several large clothing factories that are producing for foreign brands. Thousands of youth from the quarter have gone through professional training in tailoring at the workshop of Chifae, which helped them to get access to the labour market. The training is open to boys and girls and the exact contents are flexible to the changing demands of the labour market. It includes paid practical training at a clothing factory. However, the jobs in the textile industry are not well paid (150-180 €/month). For this reason it would make sense to teach the women other ways of using her textile processing skills, or to use the NGO's facilities for the production of cloth for direct sales and not only for training purposes.
Cooking and baking - ALUAFAE has a fully equipped training kitchen.
Cinema forum - This project is targeted towards children and youth from the quarter and has the aim to make them aware of the risks of illegal emigration. The children and youth are being shown audiovisual media about the topic, which is followed by group discussions.
Volunteers can participate in all the activities described on this page, but they can also contribute other skills and knowledge they consider useful for the the people of Chifae. Volunteers should be able to communicate well in at least one of the following languages: French, Spanish or English. Knowledge of French and Arabic is of advantage.
If you have any other knowledge and skills that you would like to teach to the inhabitants of Chifae, we are happy to hear from you. Volunteers should be able to communicate in at least one of the languages of French, Spanish or English.
