Home for deliquent youth
The public "Centre de sauvegarde de l'enfance" has been existing since 1956. It is a home for youth aged 10 to 18 years who have become offenders and have been sent to the centre due to judicial order. Typical offenses include theft, drug dealing and drug abuse, and bodily harm making use of stabbing weapons.
There are currently 34 boys living in the centre. Most of them are orphans or come from broken homes, having grown up on the streets. Many have spent years in various homes for orphans and street children from where they regularly escaped. The majority of them denies attending school; only two of the boys attend public school. The others are being educated informally at the centre and they are learning handcrafts.
In the centre's metal workshop, the boys have learned how to repair boats for the Tanger Yacht Club, however this cooperation is currently on hold due to a dispute. The centre's carpentry workshop is still operational though. 5 boys are doing vocational training at another NGO to become tailor, blacksmith or baker. The centre is currently trying to arrange possibilities for vocational training in auto mechanics and car body repairing. The boys are also spending time doing sports, including basketball, football (soccer), volleyball and skateboard acrobatics.
The daily schedule is as follows:
7:30 Getting up, taking shower, breakfast and cleaning the centre
9-12 School and vocational training
12-14:30 Cooking, eating and cleaning
14:30-17 School, vocational training and other activities
19:30 preparing dinner and having dinner around 21 h
On weekends there are activities, often in cooperation with other NGOs.
There are only 2 educators working in the centre in two shifts. The boys have to be supervised around the clock, even at night. But there is a total of 10 staff at the centre including a cook and a doctor. However, the centre is underfunded, which can be easily seen from the centre's equipment and furniture.
Volunteers can participate in the following activities: Teaching and doing activities with the boys, including sports (basketball, volleyball, football), working with clay, painting, sculpturing, music or any other activity that you consider adequate. Volunteers with experience can assist in training the educators and accompanying summer camps.
The boys only speak Moroccan language, therefore volunteers should be open to learn some basic words in Moroccan and also they should be able to communicate using gestures. To communicate with the staff, volunteers should be able to speak French, Spanish or English.
