Empowerment female textile workers in Morocco

In the beginning of the 1990's, hundreds of female textile workers  from the clothing factories of Tanger lost their jobs and as a consequence joined forces to form a movement called "Clean Clothes". As part of the movement's 10th anniversary in 2000, fellow textile workers from Asia and South America had been invited to discuss common issues and share experiences. As result of this encounter, an association was founded which has the aim to share thoughs, and to support female textile workers in Morocco: "Attawassol".

Main purpose of the association is to strengthen the women's autonomy and to empower them. The association is giving literacy  and foreign language classes (French, Spanish) to the women and their children. In average, there are around 50 women per year learning how to read and write, and 40 men, women and children learning French and Spanish.

In meetings, the women are being informed and trained in labour rights, labour duties and how to combine work and family life. Further, the association is arranging excursions, cultural activities and entertainment programs for the textile workers and their children. These activities have the goal to provide opportunities to socialise and to get to know new things. 

Encounters with textile workers from other countries, particularly from Spain, have the aim to enable cultural exchange and share thoughts.

Further, the association is active in doing investigation about the compliance of the women's working conditions.

Volunteers can participate in all activities listed on this page. Good knowledge of French, Spanish or English are required.
