Literacy, languages, tailoring, computers for women
The „Union de l’action féminine“ (UAF) was founded in 1983, following the "8th of March" movement (International Women's Day), which in Morocco stands for the fight for women's rights.
The organisation managed to initiate a nationwide debate about women's rights, and for more than 20 years has the reputation of being Morocco's leading NGO dealing with women's rights. The NGO is operating women centres in several cities of Morocco.
The „Union de l’action féminine“ is advocating the abolition of any form of discrimination against women, be it politically, legally, economically, socially or culturally. The union is fighting against domestic and gender-specific violence and supports women to advance into decision-making positions at any level of society and to be able to make full use of their civil rights.
The organisation is carrying out campaigns to sensitise and motivate women against discrimination. They are giving iteracy courses, and are educating the women in health, women's rights, civil rights, and environmental care. UAF are legally, psychologically, medically and socially supporting victims of violence, and are helping women to complete vocational training and to start into self-employment.
Our volunteers usually assist at the union's centre in Tanger. They can teach school children in foreign languages (Spanish and French for primary school kids, English for adolescents) and they can teach the women reading and writing. The centre also has a small library with children's books, a room with sewing machines and a computer room. At the moment, the centre is looking for volunteers to teach tayloring and computers. Similar volunteer work is also possible with UAF in Rabat.
