AIDS centre in Morocco
The Association de lutte contra le sida (ALCS) in Tangier is doing educational work about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and is offering anonymous and free HIV tests and AIDS counselling.
In Morocco, AIDS is not such a big problem as it is in sub-Saharan Africa, however it is appalling how little the population knows about the topic. In a survey which has been carried out by ALCS in 2006, only 2/3 of the men and only 1/3 of the women knew that condoms protect from AIDS.
Main target group for the educational work of ALCS are adolescents that do or do not go to school, students, women, and male and female sex workers.
At the centre of ALCS which is directed by a female physician, everyone can get anonymous, discreet and free HIV tests. Cases of infection will be attended medically and psychologically.
The mobile unit also visits villages outside of Tangier for HIV tests and campaigning work.
Volunteers/interns can assist in the following areas:
* Inventory/Logistics/Stock keeping of medicines. At the moment, the centre doesn't have any inventory system for medicines. A volunteer is needed to introduce the centre to such system and do the stock keeping during his or her period of stay.
* Psychology - Support of AIDS patients and professional training of the ALCS staff in psychosocial topics.
Volunteers/interns should be able to communicate in French (or Arabic).
