Botanic garden for the city of Tangier

Professors and staff of the University of Tangier are running an association which is widely involved into many matters related to the university. One of the association's activities is the improvement and redesign of the university campus’ exteriour area. In many areas of the campus attractive gardening works have already been carried out.

On a larger part of the plot, several biologists, geologists and other scientists are now planning to start a botanic garden. There is already an experimental garden with open areas and a greenhouse, where various domestic and exotic plants are being kept, crossbred and duplicated. Special interest lies in species of botanic noteworthiness.

The members of the association already have several ideas for the botanic garden, such as implementing a tropical area, a Japanese and an Andalusian-Arabic garden. Further, a vertical garden is being planned; it would be the first of its kind in Morocco. The botanic garden should have an educational purpose, being of interest to students and school classes, but also it should be accessible as a recreational area for the general public who would pay a small entrance fee. The basic idea of the project is also to use the university botanic garden to convince the city administration of Tangier about the success of implementing a large municipal public botanic garden for the city of Tangier.

The association is looking for volunteers who see this project as an exciting challenge. First, a detailed concept and design has to be done. It is realistic to get financial means for the garden’s implementation. The volunteer can then participate in the implementation of the garden, together with the members of the association and further helpers.
