Veterinary at Kilimanjaro
The private veterinary surgery of Dr. Mnyoni is located in the centre of Moshi Town. Dr. Mnyoni is an experienced vet who has employed two young fellow vets.
Around 80% of their work is carried out treating livestock on farms and in the fields. The main animals being treated are cows, pigs, chicken, goats, donkeys and poultry. The vets are usually moving around the whole Kilimanjaro area every day from 8 am to 5 pm. You can accompany them and actively participate in their work. Animal diseases are being diagnosed and treated on the farms and pastures. Further, vaccinations and inseminations are also being done.
The remaining 20% of the vets' working time are spent at the surgery where they treat domestic animals and pets (such as dogs and cats), do surgery and post mortem diagnoses.
In case of animal diseases, the farmers of the region typically seek the help of the vets immediately; traditional medicine doesn't play an important role any more, even the Maasai in remote areas are having their cattle vaccinated. African wildlife is not being treated by the vets as this falls under the responsibility of the National Park authorities only.
Common diseases for poultry of the area are typhoid, Newcastle disease, coccidiosis, salmonellosis and mineral deficiency. For cattle (bovine), problems include heart water disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, trypanosomiasis, east coast fever (ECF), dystocia, Rift Valley Fever, and Anthrax. For swine (Pocine), common diseases include Swine Ersypelas (Diamond Skin Disease), Metritis and Rift Valley Fever; Dogs can get Parvovirus Disease, Canine distemper, leptospirosis and rabies. Other complications applying to all animals include dehydration, choking and poisoning.
While the young vets are typically doing the work at the farms, Dr. Mnyoni is spending more time at the surgery where he also sells animal food, animal accessories and animal medicines.
Internships and volunteering is possible for participants with and without any previous experience.
