Waste management in Tangier
The comprehensive "Programme de Gestion et de Protection de l'Environnement" (PGPE) in Tangier is part of a cooperation between GTZ, the German Society of technical cooperation, and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Aim of the project is to achieve alliances and synergies to improve the environmental conditions in the city of Tangier by fostering cooperation between authorities, local initiatives, NGOs and private businesses.
The main projects carried out in Tangier include water management, waste management and environmental campaigns targeting the city's general population.
The "Centre d'éducation à l'environnement de Tanger" (CEET) is providing classes and information about environmental aspects. Target group are particularly youth and students. Also mediators are being trained at the centre.
In the area of waste management, the PGPE program is particularly dealing with waste collectors. These are men (an estimated number of around 200) who in an informal and unorganised way are making their living by collecting recyclables such as glass and cardboard from the municipal waste-disposal dump, in order to sell them to recycling companies. A study has been carried out to investigate who the waste collectors are and how they are working. For several years, there have been plans to privatise the waste dump which would take the waste collectors' livelihood. Instead of collecting recyclables at the waste dump, they would rummage the garbage bins and rubbish containers on the streets of Tangier which would cause further problems.
For this reason, the GPGE project is trying to find solutions how the rubbish collectors can be integrated into the planned privatisation of the sector and how at the same time their work conditions in aspects of hygiene and risk-prevention can be improved.
Volunteers/interns should have knowledge about the following subject areas:
* Waste management
* Organic waste
* Environmental management
* Organizing and managing social cooperatives/collectives/associations
* Environmental education
It is required to be able to communicate in French or Arabic.
