Kindergarten in Chefchaouen
The kindergarten of the women group "Hanna Massouda" in Chefchaouen is targeted at children of poor families. The children aged 2 to 6 years are divided in three groups. They attend the nursery school for 2.5 years prior to attending primary school.
During the first year of kindergarten, the children are typically just playing; in the second year they already start learning reading and writing. The Arabic and Latin writing systems are being taught simultanously. To learn making use of the Latin letters, the children are being taught basic French words. Furthermore, in the second year of kindergarten, the children are being taught numbers and simple maths.
The nursery school is a non-profit organisation. The female educators either work on a voluntary basis or only receive a small allowance. The parents of the children just pay a monthly symbolic contribution of around 5 Euro (8 USD). The nursery is primarily funded by national development programs.
As a volunteer or intern, you are going to support the educators playing with the children and teaching them numbers and letters for instance.
