Kindergartens in Zanzibar
We can offer internships and volunteering options in nursery schools (kindergartens) in Zanzibar.
The available options are:
1. Uzi Island
Uzi Island is an island in the south of Zanzibar. During low
tide it is possible to reach the island overland; there is an approximately 1 km
long connecting road between Zanzibar and Uzi, which during low tide is also
served by Daladalas, the public transport of Zanzibar, and Zanzibar Town is
reachable within one hour. The island therefore is not really remote, but still
has its own island character.
The private kindergarten is located in the middle of the
village of Uzi which has around 2000 inhabitants. The villagers of Uzi are
friendly and open-minded towards visitors. Everyone will like to know from your
where you are from and wants you to tell things about your country.
Most of the villagers are farmers or fishermen. In the
village there are a couple of small groceries. There is electricity and a water
pipe bringing fresh water from Zanzibar mainland. The living standard in Uzi is
the same as in any other village of Zanzibar. In Uzi there are no tourist
hotels, but there are regular cultural tourism visitor groups that explore the
village and the island. The islanders are positive about this kind of tourism.
Uzi is a safe island. People know each other and they don't lock the front doors
of their houses.
Every day around 100 children aged 3-5 from Uzi are attending
the kindergarten and you can play with the children and teach them reading,
writing and simple maths. You will basically be part of the village community
and the children will also look for you at your accommodation which is located
only at 2 minutes walking distance from the kindergarten, at the house of
Isaac, where all foreigners stay when visiting Uzi.
Isaac is proud of having accommodated Germans, Americans, Japanese and guests of many other nationalities and he enjoys showing his guest book to visitors with previous guest's words of thank. He can even say a couple of phrases in many languages. His accommodation is recommended by "Deutsche Welle", the worldwide public German radio broadcasting company. Isaac offers western toilets, a shower and full board.
"Deutsche Welle" equipped Issac a couple of years ago with a radio receiver and solar panels with batteries to be able to listen to the radio at any circumstances. His task consists in listening to the worldwide Deutsche Welle news in Swahili and spreading the news in the village. Whenever there are foreign visitors coming to his place, he is wearing his blue "Deutsche Welle" cap and his blue "Deutsche Welle" shirt, and he is showing his collection of Deutsche Welle magazines about science, economics and politics (in English) that he is being sent regularly. Isaac also likes opening a coconut for visitors who can enjoyed it sitting in the hammocks of Isaac's garden.
2. Montessori Kindergarten & primary school in Bububu
The Zanzibar Montessori kindergarten & primary school is located in Bububu, some 10 km north of Zanzibar Town. The kindergarten is being attended by some 50 children aged 4-6 years. They are painting, playing and "Learning by sound". There are two educators - one for the first year of
kindergarten (20 children) and one for the second year (30 children). You can
join them. If you are experienced, you can also educate a group of kids on your
own.
The same can be said about the primary school which is being
attended by a total fo 57 children aged 7 to 12. There are 30 in the first year,
and 27 in their second year of primary school. Each age group has one teacher.
The hours for primary school and kindergarten are from 7:30 to 12:30 every day. The school director is driving the school-owned bus to pick up the kids.
In the afternoon, the school building is used to offer language courses to youth and adults. At the moment the languages being taught are English and French. If you can teach other languages, this will be highly appreciated.
In December and during the holy month of Rhamadan the school and kindergarten is closed.
You would live in Zanzibar Town and communite every day by
Daladala to Bububu (20 minutes).
3. St. Monica Anglican church kindergarten
The Anglican church in the city centre of Zanzibar Town is running the "St. Monica" kindergarten which has three groups, the total number of children is around 70. Even though the kindergarten is run by the church, religious education plays a minor part only as also many muslim children are attending it.
