Vocational school teacher carpentry, welding, engineering (also: Communication, English)

Voluntary vocational school teachers of almost any subject area can teach at various institutions in Zanzibar and the Moshi region of Kilimanjaro. There are charitable organisations giving basic education to socially deprived youth such as former street children or orphans, as well as institutions that teach on an international, advanced level.

An example for a charitable organization is a church-run wood and metal workshop in Moshi/Kilimanjaro where former street children and youth from very poor families can learn welding and carpentry. Behind the workshop there is a boarding house for 4 students who stay together for one year. The workshop is operating without any donations or development funds, because the workpieces are commissioned work carried out for churches, schools and other clients. After spending one year at the workshop, the graduates can work as a carpenter or welder. Volunteers who can teach these subject areas are always needed.

VETA in Moshi/Kilimanjaro is a vocational training centre for technical careers. It is financed by the Tanzanian Chamber of Minerals and Energy (TCME) and by South African mining corporations, offering a professional training on an international level. Even though the focus is on mining, graduates can find jobs in other sectors such as engine technologies, transportation technologies, refrigeration technologies, machine-building, and tubing technologies. Graduates can find employment on a world-wide level.

The training takes 3-4 years and only some 5% of the applicants are being chosen. To be allowed to the institute, applicants have to be able to show a work contract with a reputable technology company in Tanzania, which actually only includes the mining companies, the brewing companies and Toyota. 1/3 of the training is theoretical classes at school, 1/3 is practical classes at school, and 1/3 will take place at the student's company.

Volunteers are needed who can teach in the following subject areas, either by themselves or together with local teachers, who can assist in working out teaching materials, and who can support students in their preparation for exams: Maths (degree of difficulty around A-levels), engineering, engineering drawing and structural steel drawing, industrial electronics, and communication.

Communication includes teaching advanced English and technical English, business communication, CV writing, and work/project documentation.

Classes are taking place from Februrary to May and from August to November. Those who want to teach themselves should be available for at least 4 months during the above mentioned terms, if you just want to volunteer working out teaching materials or supporting a local teacher, you can stay for durations of one month or more.
