Acupuncture at Zanzibar hospital
Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar holds an acupuncture ward, which is a unique thing not only in Africa, but also throughout the Western world. It is a steady component of Mnazi Mmoja's treatment of certain problems including chronic pains, depression, impotence and the effects of a stroke. The ward has already been founded in the 1960's and is famous in the whole of East Africa. Patients are not only travelling to Zanzibar from the Tanzanian mainland, but even from the neighbouring countries.
The reason for the existence of this ward is the strong connection between the People's Republic of China and Zanzibar which started in the times when Zanzibar was still a socialist country. The acupunture ward was started by the Chinese and still today there is permanently a Chinese acupuncture specialist present. Several Tanzanians have been trained in acupuncture and are working at Mnazi Mmoja.
Placements are possible both for participants who want to learn about acupuncture as well as for specialists for whom the application of acupuncture in Africa will certainly also be a novelty. Shortly we will publish an article about acupuncture in Zanzibar on this website, it is currently being written by our first acupuncture volunteer Nilsa from London.
